AB OBJECTIVES: To promote changes in the sexual behavior of young people in
ten villages. METHODS: Training of 10 youths (5 girls, 5 boys) from each
village in animation techniques for AIDS and STDs; Training and supply
to two young men per village on promotion and sale of condoms;
Motivating youths through profit on condom sales; Creation of village
theatre groups who perform plays on AIDS/STDs; Organising education
sessions by young people for young people. RESULTS: 50 youths trained as
communicators on AIDS/STDs; 2 theatre groups and 2 choral groups
created; performance of plays in 10 villages; condom usage increased
from 9% to 18% in one year; 94% of villagers know the AIDS prevention
methods and 97% are ready to be tested. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
Theatre and traditional folklore are effective means of communication in
HIV/AIDS campaigns. Their use by youths was crucial for obtaining the
successful outcome. These theatre presentations can be filmed on video
and used for education activities in other villages.
